This my first attempt at knitting a sock. I'm following instructions found in the Basic Sock Pattern in the book Learn To Knit Socks, from the American School of Needlework (ISBN 0-88195-871-9). I picked it up at A.C. Moore today (Dec. 2). The only yarn I had that's even close to sock weight is some baby wool I got at The World In Stitches (LYS in Littleton), so I started with that on size 2 DPNs. So far, so good (I'm quite tickled with the heel!), but I'm having trouble with the instructions for the gusset. I don't know if you're supposed to pick up stitches in the heel flap using the running end of the yarn or not... it's a quandary. Stay tuned to my journal for more details.
